Passion Versus Brains
As I sit here emotional in Munich posted up at the iconic Mae West sculpture, I think back on a few moments that motivated me to separate myself from the pack and make a name for myself. My father always reminded me that no matter what happens in life, as long as your name is good, you can start all over and find success again. My father was a man driven by passion but short on formal education. And although my education level surpassed dads, I’m not a PHD or MBA. What I’m trying to say is, there’s a lot of smarter woman and men out there than I am but I have somehow outperformed 99% of them. Which leads me to my several million dollar question.
CAN TRUE PASSION BEAT BRAINS IN A HEAD TO HEAD MATCHUP LIKE MMA CHAMPIONS?
I remember one of my moments of truth that sparked me to step up my paper game and work harder. I was on a first date with Tia who is now my wife and she described her ideal husband. She went down her wish list of qualifications and degrees and I quickly realized that she hadn’t described me. I have always been a highly motivated, street smart man with common sense and enough courage for 10 other men but short on college credits. I said to Tia, “I don’t think I’m the man you’re looking for” but clearly she was already taken by my handsome looks and Southern Charm. We’ll talk more about that in a future blog.
SO, as time passed and our social circle grew, I carried that list in the back of my mind and it fueled me to outperform every PHD, CEO and entrepreneur I came in contact with or read about. My passion to be considered equal and then one day exceptional pushed me to defy all odds. Although I still have several successful business professionals on my list to reach their accomplishments, I have changed my thinking slightly. I have decided to reallocate some of my passion back to my family, health, spirituality and having little fun. But honestly, I still want to see my name on the billionaire list one day too.
So based upon this unique experience of being driven by my passion in an industry filled with brainiacs, I would say this. PASSION DRIVES INTELLECT. If you are truly passionate about your goals, they will drive your intellect like a rocket ship so never discount yourself against someone who may appear smarter than you are today because there’s always tomorrow. And beware of doing more harm than good by over pursuing goals without taking care of the family business.
